So many times people say to me “I pray and I pray, and yet God doesn’t answer my prayers. How am I to have faith when He doesn’t hear me?”

Yes, it IS challenging to have patience and wait for God’s answer. Patience isn’t one of my virtues either. And yet, time after time, God has proven to me that He DOES answer prayers and of course I know He always listens. God’s answers aren’t always as quickly as I had hoped, but they are never late, and maybe not in the way that I expected but I have learned His way is always best.

I am reminded of Psalm 35:13 in which David despairs that his prayers seemed unanswered. When God’s answer doesn’t come immediately, David, like many of us, assumed that He was not listening.

And yet, God IS listening. He hears all of our prayers and our answer comes in His own time and with His all knowing wisdom. Remember His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts. He has plans for us far above anything that we can ask or even think and sometimes we need a little re-directing.

The other day I heard an old Garth Brooks song, called “Unanswered Prayers.” He sang, “Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers…” The song refers to his prayer as a teenager that a romance would work out. It didn’t, but down the road he met and married a wonderful woman. The song ends:

“And as she walked away and I looked at my wife and then and there I thanked the good Lord for the gifts in my life.”

Like Psalm 35:13, the song is right. “Some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.” God knows what is best for us and we have to learn to walk in faith trusting Him every step of the way.

Sometimes, when a specific prayer goes unanswered, God has something better in mind. So have faith and keep walking and praying and trusting!
