John 4:3-39 Jesus has an agenda, an assignment…to change a city by changing a woman.

I. First thing Jesus said to the woman “Give me to drink”
a. He had to check he capacity to give H20
i. Whenever you come to church just to get/receive you limit your capacity

I Corinthians 13:11  When I was a child I talked like a child, thought like a child, reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put my childish ways behind me.

ii. You must be prepared to pour out what you have.

Proverbs 11:25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

b. The question is, Can you pour?
i. In essence, Jesus told her you don’t have an inner well, and that’s why you keep running out of water.
ii. Your heart is the well spring of life.
c. Often in life our experiences have clogged the lines to our hearts, there is no “inner well”
d. We get cluttered and confused, crowded, and disordered

Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart:  for they shall see God.
e. God wants to clean and clear whatever is hindering you from coming to the fullness of Christ’s character

II. The woman had 3 things that hindered her from recognizing and receiving her destiny.
a. her religion
i. her perception is always tied to something besides herself
ii. #1 problem the disciples had with Jesus is that every time He would show up in a different form they didn’t recognize Him.
iii. He is too multi-faceted to be locked into your routine and ritual
b. her condition
i. Give me to drink so I don’ have to keep coming back.
ii. She is stuck in a system that is not working
c. her relations
i. Your relationships are a reflection of your soul
ii. Watch for those that deplete you or take advantage
Jesus doesn’t condemn her but catharsizes her

A catheter is a thin, flexible tube that is put into the body to permit introduction or withdrawal, to keep the passage open.

III. Every other woman in the Bible, Jesus “did” something, this woman He talked to
a. Its what He told her that changed her.
b. A cathartic conversation
i. emotionally purging and purifying

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

c. So here we have a brief encounter BUT a BIG CHANGE
d. God desires a people in the earlier part of their lives who have been refined to reflect His image and glory.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

e. As a believer your life is in a continuing state of being restructured, remodeled and upgraded.

Romans 8:28-29  And we know that ALL things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His son.

Conformed is to denote a togetherness, a union it is jointly formed and fashioned like unto by companionship and process.

*Remember the virtue of any institution is NOT so much in its doctrines or organization BUT it’s virtues resides in the QUALITY of a person it produces.

Are we producing God in our life?

Luke 6:43-45  For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

It’s a matter of your heart
God loves you too much to leave you the same

John 15:1-2 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Isaiah 48:9-10 For my name’s sake will I defer my anger and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. Behold, I have refined thee, But not with silver, I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

IV. To Refine is to be Free From Unwanted Impurities
a. To improve or perfect by pruning
i. when God is pruning in your life its just to make room for increase
b. Every step deeper into the presence of God will reveal areas in our hearts that need to be purged or cleansed.

Remember Cleansing becomes a way of life but it doesn’t take a lifetime!!
V. It’s Just a Decision
a. To set your heart and affection on God
b. The more you allow God to refine you and design you the better you are going to look to yourself and to the world

WHAT you go through in life is nearly as important as
HOW you go though life.

What you accomplish in your life isn’t nearly as important as the Character you allow God to accomplish in you.

c. The things of great value to God are spiritual qualities of maturity

I Peter 3:3-4 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

d. This verse references to women, however it holds value in regards to the overall principal
e. Your beauty should not come from outward adornments such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes
f. Instead it should be that of your inner self, the unfolding beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
g. Its what you develop on the inside that is valuable to God

VI. Nine of the Most Notable Marks of Spiritual Maturity in God’s Word
a. The ability to Love (John 4:7-21)
i. Love is giving…it flows from having received love and value from God
ii. Mature people are givers
iii. True mature love is selfless love…not selfish
b. A Joyful Outlook on Life
i. an immature person always seeks outside stimuli to make himself happy
ii. Happiness is situation and circumstance bound
iii. The spiritually mature person seeks joy…which is an inner quality
iv. Joy is rooted in an awareness of the greatness of God and His creative work in your life
v. Joy flows from the inside out…apart from any external factor or situation
vi. So a joyful person brings happiness to their outer experiences instead of trying to extract happiness from them
c. A Peaceful Spirit
i. An immature person is restless always looking for something to saturate the anxiety, fears, and restless yearning
ii. Genuine Peace is a feeling of wholeness that comes as a result of knowing who you are in God
d. Patience
i. The immature wants all of life in a gulp, quick fix, a quick cure, quick success.
ii.    Mature people have learned that there is a process of time for worthy things
e. An Attitude of Kindness
i. Immature people are discourteous and arrogant
ii.  Mature people extend courtesy and allow others to express their opinion and choices
f. Good Character
i. Good character is marked by integrity, honesty, and consistency
ii. integrity is the same on the outside as it is on the inside
iii. No break between actions and beliefs
g.    Faith in God
i. The immature person trusts himself or relies on other people to be his benefactors
ii. The mature person can believe the best in another person but recognizes the frailty of humanity and puts His confidence and trust in the Lord

Psalm 20:7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

h.    A Humble Stance toward others and God
i. Meekness is not Weakness…it is controlled strength
ii. Humility doesn’t mean you are a doormat, it says I am willing to be flexible enough to accommodate your good desires and you strong enough to express my own good desires.
i.    Self Control
i. The immature wants what he wants and how he wants its
ii.    The mature person has developed a willpower and restraint and seeks the best for all involved in the ways and times that are most beneficial and appropriate

Proverbs 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city

John 7:37-38 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
