Nehemiah 1:1-4 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,
That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven

I. God is Building…
a. A church that He has
i. Ordained
ii. Ordered
iii. Chosen
iv. Desired

b. A place and a people with His
i. Presence
ii. Power
iii. Purpose
1. If we are to gain God’s greatest blessings, we must embrace His highest purpose
2. The eternal purpose of God is to sum all things up in Christ
a. In heaven and in earth

Ephesians 1:9-10 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

3. He desires to bring the living Christ into each of us as individuals
a. (or) to conform us to the “image” of Christ
4. Then, as Christ-filled individuals, we can transform the church in order to advance the kingdom of God
a. We cannot see Christ corporately manifested in the church until we as individuals embrace ture “Christ likeness”

II. Like in the Days of Nehemiah
a. We are living in a time where the temple was restored
i. The spirit, or the center of worship in a man was “rebuilt”

“Neh” (name) = Comforter
1. So is that of the Holy Spirit (comforter) is leading lives left in ruins that could not be repaired.
2. For over 90 years they tried to build, which then became the resting place for GOD
a. You are God’s resting place (His habitation) Psalms 132:14

b. The restoration of the city of Jerusalem began under Zerrubabel
i. Continued under Ezra
1. from Zerrubabel to Ezra the work took 90 years
ii. And completed by Nehemiah
1. finished in only 52 days!
a. At the end of 52 days from today, what looks like rubbish and ruins in your life is going to be restored and rebuilt!!
iii. Not only was the “city of God” restored but reformation came forth
1. Nehemiah Chapter 13 (Final)

III. Reformation (Greek) = to straighten thoroughly, or to rectify
a. To make a structural adjustment
b. To make straight that which has been misaligned
c. To put back into correct order or form (skeletal adjustment)
i. A correction of the inner mechanism which gives shape or form to the outer image
1. you are changing society (the church world)
2. In the (church world) it points to a “complete overhaul” of mentally, understanding, attitudes and perceptions

d. Reformation does not have to do with building another form but to re-establish the original
i. Reformation is a re-alignment and adjustment to God’s original intent for your life and His church
ii. You are a “reformer” – you push to change the rules of religion

IV. Religion does not Work, but Relationship with God Does
a. You want what God wants- a real “relationship”, regardless of where you have been or what you have done
b. Based on grace extended to you with unconditional love and acceptance – (true redemption)
i. He selected YOU
ii. He invited YOU
iii. He called YOU
1. and YOUR story is going to bring HIM Glory!
c. Your life is a reflection of who God is – 2 Corinthians 3:3
d. People can’t figure you out
i. How could you go through “that” and be like “this”?
ii. You “love” instead of “hate”
iii. You came out of “nothing” and brought forth “greatness”

Reformation comes when people make a conscious decision to change the predictable outcome of their future… to bring forth reformation (our conclusion) we have to be rebuilt, repaired, and restored

V. Nehemiah Chapter 1 (the 16th book of the Bible)
a. He was the royal cup-bearer at the palace of Shushan
b. While Nehemiah was enjoying his position in the palace, he doesn’t forget where he came from
i. Your history tells a lot about your destiny
c. Verse 2 Reveals when his brother returns from a trip to his homeland Nehemiah asks him about
i. The condition of God’s people
ii. The condition of God’s place
1. ( a person who has no questions, will never locate a bigger cause for living )

His questions were not about the problem, but about the purpose. The response from his brother reveals the condition…

d. Verse 3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

VI. Remnant =
a. That which is left over
b. That which remains (residue)
c. That which is left after a part is removed
d. One who escapes (or) a survivor

Psalms 124:7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

1. Stop asking “why” it happened and start asking “why” you survived it (why were you left) and you will discover
a. Your power = is a (sum total) of your pain
2. Every human is born with 2 agendas
a. God’s
b. Enemies

Tough times call for tough people…

3. The strength of God’s hand is often dictated by the strength of the times
a. You know you’re called when you made it through something that should have destroyed you- you survived
4. Because God has a way of protecting what He has called- you cannot keep destiny down

Genesis 45:7 (NIV) But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

Footnotes: Or save you as a great band of survivors

1. Remnant = to swell up
a. To leave, (be left)
b. To remain or to reserve the rest

Genesis 45:7 (KJV) And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

1. Posterity (Hebrew) = a remainder or residual (surviving, final portion that had escaped)

Ezra 9:8 (NIV) But now, for a brief moment, the LORD our God has been gracious in leaving us a remnant and giving us a firm place in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes and a little relief in our bondage.

Zephaniah 2:9 (NIV) Therefore, as surely as I live,” declares the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, “surely Moab will become like Sodom, the Ammonites like Gomorrah—
a place of weeds and salt pits, a wasteland forever. The remnant of my people will plunder them; the survivors of my nation will inherit their land.”

Zechariah 8:12 (NIV)  The seed will grow well, the vine will yield its fruit, the ground will produce its crops, and the heavens will drop their dew. I will give all these things as an inheritance to the remnant of this people.

VII. God Always Looks Through the Remnant
a. The remnant is the piece of cloth at the ed of the bolt
i. The cloth is usually disregarded because it is not enough to use for anything
b. The remnant is what Grandma used to make the blanket with
i. The blanket she made that covered you
ii. Kept you warm
iii. Kept you safe and protected

c. The remnant is what the boy who gave his lunch to Jesus to feed the multitudes and went home with 12 baskets
i. John Chapter 6
1. Verse 12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
a. Gather = to lead together, to collect, to assemble
b. Fragments = broken pieces that remain (the remnant)

2. Jesus put it in 12 baskets
a. The number “12” is the number of governing or government –

3. God is establishing His government with what’s left in the earth today
a. With His band of survivors = YOU
i. YOU are the REMNANT!
ii. God’s Glory will come through His Government

2 Kings 19:31 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.
