Nehemiah 1:4-11 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:
Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned.
We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.
Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.
O LORD, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.

I. City of Jerusalem = 12 Gates of Nehemiah
a. 12 is the number of governing
b. The 12 Gates restored reveal a balanced, divine order
i. North Wall
1. Sheep Gate = The principle of conversion, atonement and new birth
2. Fish Gate = Evangelism, outreach and soul winning
ii. West Wall
3.  Old Gate = Restoration of foundational truths (corner gate)
iii. South Wall
4.  Valley Gate = Humility, abasement, brokenness
5.  Dung Gate = Separation and circumcision
iv. East Wall
6.  Fountain Gate = Cleansing and purification
7.  Water Gate = God’s word, trumpets
8.  Horse Gate = overcoming and spiritual warfare
9.  East Gate = newness of life, glory and power
10.  Mipkad Gate = reward and judgment
11.  Ephraim Gate = fruitfulness and double portion
12.  Prison Gate = full commitment and rest

Nehemiah 13:22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

Keep = to hedge about, to guard, to protect (he was saying, “Protect God’s Presence”)

II. His Prayer
a. This is where purpose is initiated. Prayer changes everything
b. Nehemiah 1:4 = when he heard the bad news, he sat and wept and mourned certain days
i. You will have to deal with your humanity before your spirituality
ii. Some blows in life will knock your knees out from under you that will cause you to sit and weep

Job 16:20 My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.

Psalms 56:8 Record my lament; list my tears on your scroll are they not in your record? Or / put my tears in your wineskin

c. After he mourned the bible says he fasted and prayed
i. Mourning = is the state of sorrow when someone or something leaves your life
d. His prayer starts with confession and the acknowledgement of the sin of the people
e. Then he proceeds to plead the promises of God
i. Nehemiah carried this burden and prayed for 4 months. His prayer contained:
1. Affirmation of the attributes of God
2. Supplication and confession
3. Intercession in the light of God’s promises
4. Petition for a favorable response from King Artaveries

III. Nehemiah Refused to Quit
a. People who bring forth greatness are people who refuse to quit, they are relentless
b. They have a faith that is not “frantic” but a commitment to trust the fact
i. Faith is a calm confidence that God is going to work it all out.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

c. This is the principle of perseverance in prayer
d. You have to cultivate the fruit of the Holy Spirit (longsuffering) Galatians 5:22-30
i. Longsuffering means to endure the process with the assurance that God’s promises are going to come to pass in your life
e. Faith is resting on the promises of God
i. 1 Peter 5:7
ii. James 1:17
iii. God doesn’t change
1. James 5:6 (AMP)

IV. God Gets to Work
a. The moment you start praying, His angels are activated
b. Keep (continue) praying the invisible is going to become visible
i. The Prayer of Nehemiah begins with the attributes of God (Who “He” is)
1. Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
ii. He then confesses his sins and the sins of the people
1. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
2. Confess (Greek) = to assent
a. Humility
b. Confession
c. Repentance

Mark 3:25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand

Example: Samson didn’t know he didn’t have strength until he went to use it.

iii. Nehemiah understood God’s word always working for you or against. Chapter 1 verse 8 reveals that scattering comes with unfaithfulness
iv. You only pull back scattering when you deal with it

V. Gathering
a. Comes with obedience
b. It’s a sign of healing and recovery
c. There must be a new dedication to obedience
d. You are the Temple and the House of Prayer
i. Matthew 21:13 God doesn’t dwell in buildings, He dwells in people
ii. Jude 20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost
1. Building = to renovate. When you are damaged, praying in the spirit is renovating your house
2. Praying adds, enlarges and fixes you
3. When your prayer gets larger, so does your life

Prayer is always the initiator of purpose!!
