Understanding The Power of Words Over Your Money PDF Print E-mail

But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. Matthew 15:18

Did you know that you can lie to yourself about your life situation…and your life will believe it? Do you realize that you can deceive yourself into thinking you are in poverty…and you will create poverty in your life?

You might be thinking, “Oh come on, Paula…are you actually saying that just because my mouth says it, that makes it true?” Well, I am here to tell you, yes, that’s just what I’m saying: your words create your world. As Matthew 12:37 puts it:

For by thy words thou shall be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

And as Matthew declared in the opening scripture, what comes from our mouth stems from our heart. But while the heart may contain our feelings about ourselves and our life, it’s important to remember our feelings aren’t the facts, or even the truths, of whom we are in Christ Jesus, and of whom we are in the eyes of His Father, our Lord God.

Only God has the truth for us about all things…including our prosperity. So if it’s your heart that’s creating poverty in your life, that’s a poor excuse to stay in poverty…and it’s high time to examine what God says about the matter – and to ask Him for a change of heart!

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. Ephesians 3:20

This scripture is telling us the power worketh in us. We remember that Deuteronomy 8:18 tells us that it is God who gives us the power to get wealth. And if God gives it to us, then that power is in us. That means, with His help, we can attain financial stability and abundance…as long as we can control what we speak over and into our lives, and the lives of those we love!

For instance -- stop using terms like “never”: “I’ll never get out of this debt,” or, “I’ll never have enough money to own my own home.” Because if you keep on speaking that way, you’re right – you never will! But if you remember God’s promises, and His will and desires for good for you, you’ll remember to maintain the right perspective about your money as you work on a plan to change your financial situation.

Similarly, if your child goes shopping with you and asks for something, don’t say, “We can’t afford that.” When you speak those words, you are speaking life into that statement, and planting a seed into your child that will bear fruit when he or she becomes an over-spender someday. Also, that statement surrenders your authority over your money. That’s not respecting your money, that’s attaching a power to money that it does not have. Money is a tool, but you should never give it an authority or power over your life circumstances.

Instead, look at your child and say, “How can we afford that?’ By taking the matter in that direction, you are helping your child develop his or her own problem-solving skills. You are helping your child think about the value of things. You are showing respect for money by being accountable to your budget. And you are preserving your authority over your money by looking for a way to use it wisely.

So stop the negative power of words like “can’t” and “never” over your money. Also, start eliminating phrases like “I don’t know how” and “I am unable” from your vocabulary. By your words, you hinder or unleash God’s power in you! Start saying, “I can,” “I will,” “I am learning,” and “All things are possible”…and see how God moves in your life.

Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
Proverbs 21:23

This means that sometimes you’re going to have to tell yourself to “shut up”! Before you speak, ask yourself, “Are my words in alignment with God’s will?” Then consult the Bible, to remind yourself of His promises for those who follow His master design.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28

Unfortunately, we are all guilty of negative speaking and thinking at one time or another – so if need be, find yourself an accountability partner to help you stop speaking destruction into your life through your words!
